Meet Recap

The Holland Dutch traveled to Portage West Middle School to compete in the MHSAA Regional finals on Saturday October 28. Mother Nature supplied perfect cross country weather, cold, windy, rainy, snowy and a little sunshine. The Dutch finished tied for 6th place with Hudsonville but lost the tiebreaker to finish 7th. The Dutch were lead by Regional Champion Sam Martens with a time of 15:56.9. Nick Hoffman finished second for the Dutch and fourth overall with a time of 16:13.2. Martens and Hoffman both qualified for the MHSAA State Finals next Saturday November 4 at MIS in Brooklyn. This is Martens’ third and Hoffman’s second trip to MIS. Good luck Sam & Nick! Brad Carter, 16:56, ran a career PR, finishing third for Holland and 23rd overall, his best finish at Regionals. Alberto Castillo, 17:43, was the fourth scorer for Holland and 59th overall. Jaeger Schippa,18:19.7, was the fifth scorer for Holland and 80th place overall. Also running in the Varsity race James Walton, 19:20 and Noah Whiteman, 19:27.8 ran course and career PR respectively. In the boys JV race Henri Holland Anderson, 20:26, Aaron Curtis, 21:00 and Oscar Rafeal, 21:28 all ran career PR. Meet Recap

The Lady Dutch traveled to Portage West Middle School to compete in the MHSAA Regional Cross Country Finals on Saturday October 28. The weather provide cold, snow, rain, wind and a touch of sunshine, perfect cross country weather. Holland finished in 9th place with 206 points much improved from their 12th place finish in 2016. The Lady Dutch were lead by Junior Shayna Altvater’s sixth place finish in 19:25.6. By virtue of the sixth place finish, Altvater punched her ticket to the MHSAA State finals next weekend at MIS. Shayna is the first female cross country student athlete to qualify for the State Final since 2002. Great work Shayna. Junior Joydyn Elders, 19:58.3, a season PR and just two seconds short of her career PR, was the second finisher for Holland in 16th place, overall, just missing a trip to the State Finals by one spot. “It was a break out race for Jordyn” stated Coach Martens “and while she is disappointed this race will provide confidence moving forward” Senior Abby Book running a career PR, 20:57.3 in her final race for Holland finished third for Holland and 49th overall. Great work Abby! Freshman Olivia DeGraaf, 21:45, ran her second best time of the season finishing fourth for the Lady Dutch and 63rd overall. Freshman Abby Mulder, 22:04, also ran her second best time of the year finishing fifth for Holland and 72nd overall. Joanne Padron, 22:37.7 ran a career PR in the varsity race. Natalie DeGraaf, 23:56, ran a course PR by 20 seconds. Elizabeth Walter, 25:26, competing in the JV race ran a career PR.

Game Recap

The Holland men’s soccer team won a regional championship on Thursday night by defeating Grand Rapids Christian 2-0. Grant Hofland scored the first Holland goal by heading a pass from Sam Accardo into the net in the first half. In the second half, Owen Beird slotted a ball to Jose Penaloza who shielded a defender, spun, and fired a ball into the corner of the goal. “I am very happy for the boys. They have worked hard all season dealing with injuries and sickness while challenging themselves with a very difficult schedule,” said Holland coach Greg Ceithaml. “They deserve to enjoy this accomplishment, but they also know that they have work to do. We have to get ourselves physically and mentally ready for our semifinal match next Wednesday.” Holland is now 17-5-2. Holland will play at Portage Northern High School in the state semifinal at 7:00 against Stevensville-Lakeshore or Coldwater.

The Holland High School Varsity swimming and diving team defeated Unity Christian 111-70. Holland won all 12 events with Emma Henninges qualifying for the Division 2 State meet in the 500 freestyle. Hennings also won the 200 free, Tessa Conner won the 200 IM and the 100 fly, Sage Gettings won the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle, Alyssa Ruff won diving, Anika Wehrmeyer won the 100 backstroke, and Evelyn VanderVelde won the 100 breaststroke.

Holland defeated Reeths Puffer 8-0 on Tuesday night in the Regional semifinal. Sam Accardo had two goals and two assists, Grant Hofland had two goals, Jose Penaloza had a goal and two assists, and Landyn Beal had a goal and an assist. Daniel Arellano had three assists. Michael Saldana and Caleb Steeby each had goals. Goalkeeper Peter Keegin earned the shut-out behind defenders Chuy Morales, Brandon Ballesteros, Michael Saldana, and Ryan Elenbaas. “The team played very well tonight,” said Holland coach Greg Ceithaml. “We will have to play well again on Thursday in order to compete with Grand Rapids Christian. They are an excellent team, so we have to have a strong practice on Wednesday in order to be ready.” Holland is now 16 – 5- 2 and will play Grand Rapids Christian at Holland on Thursday night at 6:00 for the Regional Championship.

Game Recap

Holland won a District Championship by beating Holland Christian 5-0 on Saturday afternoon. Daniel Arellano paced the Dutch with two goals and an assist. Landyn Beal, Grant Hofland, and Owen Beird each added goals and Caleb Steeby added an assist. “We played well today,” said Holland coach Greg Ceithaml. “Holland Christian is a very disciplined team. We seem to have coalesced at the right time. We hope to maintain our momentum into the regional tournament.” Holland is now 15-5-2 and plays Reeths-Puffer on Tuesday at Holland at 5:00 for the regional semifinal.

Holland defeated Allendale 5-1 in the District semifinal on Thursday night at Holland Christian. Jose Penaloza scored twice while Sam Accardo, Owen Beird, and Caleb Steeby each scored goals. Daniel Arellano and Grant Hofland had two assists each. “I was impressed by Allendale’s speed and counter-attack,” said Holland coach Greg Ceithaml. “I am glad that we increased our pace of play and more accurate passing allowed us to be more aggressive going forward.”
Holland will play Holland Christian at the Holland Christian field on Saturday at noon for the district championship. Holland is now 14-5-2
